Company: International Fish Canners

Drive Computing, the Yorkshire-based software house specialising in business information systems for the process industry, has announced a £150,000 order from International Fish Canners for the BLISS business control software.

The company is based in Fraserburgh, Scotland, and is the sole surviving fish canner in the UK. IFC employs over 250 staff and processes millions of cans of sild/brisling sardines, mackerel fillets and other canned seafood every year. Over 60% of the company's sales are exported world-wide, whilst in the home market IFC supplies leading distributor John West Foods.

For quality, all products are hand packed in the Fraserburgh factory, where controls are intensive and stringent to meet the highest standards. The processes are computer documented and batch controlled right through the production operation. IFC's expansion in the last few years, however, had highlighted inadequacies of existing computer systems and the need for a sophisticated and fully integrated computer system that would streamline business systems and provide for customer and legislative requirements.

IFC used the Ernst & Young consultancy to review several packages that best fitted the company's needs, and finally selected Drive Computing's BLISS software. The main reasons were that the package provided the optimum solution in the process specific areas of the software, Drive Computing is the original author of the software, and BLISS operates on a range of Unix-based hardware.

The system provides integrated modules for manufacturing, quality material and inventory control, sales management, purchasing, production planning and accounts. The company say that the strength of module integration, combined with system flexibility, enabled it to tailor the software to its exact requirements. The BLISS system is now providing IFC with the internal and external management information and systems controls needed to run the business as intended.
